Enefit Green is investing half a billion euros in new wind farms in Estonia and Lithuania
Enefit Green starts the construction of Sopi-Tootsi Wind Farm, establishing the largest wind energy area in Estonia. Construction of a new wind farm in Lithuania will also begin. Enefit Green will invest nearly half a billion euros in these renewable energy projects.
On Thursday, 22nd of December, Enefit Green made the final investment decision on the construction of the 255-megawatt Sopi-Tootsi Wind Farm. Enefit Green also decided to build the 80-megawatt Kelme Wind Farm in Lithuania, which is the first stage of a three-part development project. The company will invest nearly 450 million euros in these projects over the next two years.
According to Aavo Kärmas, Chairman of the Management Board of Enefit Green, this is Estonia's largest investment in renewable energy so far. "Sopi-Tootsi Wind Farm will be the most modern and powerful renewable energy production area in Estonia and the Baltic States, which will nearly double the current amount of wind energy produced in Estonia. The output of the farm will cover 8,5 per cent of the entire country’s electricity consumption and 40% of the electricity needs of household consumers," Kärmas described.
According to Kärmas, the three-stage Kelme project to be built in Lithuania will be even greater in its impact than Sopi-Tootsi. "We are currently starting the construction of the first stage of the Kelme project in Lithuania, and we plan to make investment decisions on the following stages during the next year as well. Kelme Wind Farm as a whole will add 320 megawatts of production and a large amount of cheap renewable energy to the regional electricity market," Kärmas said.
Enefit Green is investing nearly 450 million euros in the construction of the two farms. The investment in Sopi-Tootsi amounts to 305 million euros and Kelme 1st to 145 million euros. To ensure the necessary funds for the construction of both farms, Enefit Green has concluded long-term power purchase and sale agreements. In addition, Enefit Green has successfully participated in the national tender for 110 gigawatt hours with Sopi-Tootsi Wind Farm.
As the next steps, Enefit Green will sign contracts with the builders of both wind farms and with the suppliers of wind turbines. After signing the contracts, preparatory work for construction will begin on both sites. Kelme and Sopi-Tootsi are planned to start production in 2024.
Sopi-Tootsi Wind Farm in North Pärnu County will be the largest in the Baltic States in terms of capacity. In addition to the 255-megawatt farm with 38 wind turbines, Enefit Green is planning to build a 63-megawatt solar park nearby. The investment decision on the solar park is planned for next year.

Enefit Green currently has two more wind farms under construction in Lithuania, one in Finland, and a wind and solar hybrid farm in Estonia. In addition to two solar parks are under construction in Poland.
