Enefit Green begun transporting wind turbines from Klaipeda Port to Kelme wind farm
This week, Enefit Green has begun transporting wind turbine components from the Port of Klaipeda to the Kelme wind farm being developed in Lithuania. The transportation takes place at night to minimise disruptions.
Enefit Green will build the Kelme wind farm in Western Lithuania in three phases, the first of which will involve the installation of 14 wind turbines. If construction goes according to plan, the 80-megawatt Kelme 1 wind farm will produce around 270 gigawatt-hours of renewable energy per year starting from 2025.
To date, the wind turbine manufacturer Nordex has transported the turbine towers, blades and nacelles by ship from different parts of the world to the Port of Klaipeda in Lithuania. As there are 14 wind turbines and their components are large, they were transported in several shipments.
"Kelmė district is one of the largest regions of renewable energy development in Lithuania and the three-part Kelme wind farm will in turn be Enefit Green's largest development project. Western Lithuania is a suitable region for building wind farms thanks to its excellent wind conditions, sparse population and lack of restrictions arising from nature or national defence," explains Lauri Ulm, Head of Wind Energy at Enefit Green.
A total of 14 wind turbine foundations will be built on the Kelme 1 wind farm, each supported by 56 piles. The solution was developed by engineers to ensure that the wind farm fits the local geological conditions. "The wind turbine tower is 140 metres and the top part 230 metres high, so the installation will be a time-consuming job for the builders but an interesting sight for passers-by," Ulm added. The turbines will be installed later this year and the wind farm will start generating green electricity at the end of the year.
The wind farm will be built by NOBE, TIS, DS-1 and Merko. The wind turbines are manufactured and installed by Nordex, one of the best-known wind turbine manufacturers in the Nordic countries.
The next phases of the Kelme project will provide a capacity of 87 MW to 150 MW. When completed, all three wind farms will provide a total capacity of more than 300 MW and will produce a total of nearly 1,100 GWh of green energy.
Enefit Green is investing nearly €300 million in the construction of the first two phases of the wind farm.
